Heritage Council Shortlisted for Irish Planning Award for FAC supported Pilot National Town Centre Health Check Training Programme
The Heritage Council’s ‘Pilot’ National Town Centre Health Check Training Programme has been nominated for the 2018 Irish Planning Awards under the category ‘Participation and Engagement’ by the Irish Planning Institute. FAC contributed to this innovative training programme with Dr William Hynes presenting at a ‘town team’ workshop in Dublin Castle on 16th March 2017.
The programme, which was designed and delivered by the Heritage Council’s Alison Harvey with assistance from FAC Associate and former Heritage Council Planner Trevor Keppel, developed an innovative town centre-led retail, cultural heritage and tourism evidence base. Since the ‘Pilot’, Town Centre Health Checks have become a focus for revitalisation of towns across Ireland in measuring the performance of towns vibrancy and vitality.
Using international best practice methods in collaborative, community-led urban regeneration, the programme trained ‘town teams’ representative of a diverse range of interests in seven towns across Ireland and facilitated the preparation of Town Centre Health Checks, which provide an evidence-base for the preparation of statutory plans such as Local Area Plans and Public Realm Plans. The ‘Pilot’ National Town Centre Health Check Training was prepared in collaboration with RGDATA and with the support of the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, the Department of Housing, Planning, and Local Government, the Irish Planning Institute, the Irish Landscape Institute, the Royal Institute of Architects Ireland, University College Dublin, Limerick Institute of Technology (Thurles), Institute of Technology Tralee, Dublin Institute of Technology and Queens University Belfast.
The Irish Planning Institute Awards Dinner will be held at the Grand Hotel in Malahide on 8th February 2018.
