FAC at the IFIP WG 8.3 Conference

FAC at the IFIP WG 8.3 Conference

This year’s international IFIP WG 8.3 conference provided an ideal forum to showcase the Crisis Communication Tool (CCT) which is currently being developed by FAC for the S-HELP project.

‘Big Data, Better Decisions, Brighter Future’ was the theme of this year’s conference, which explored how the increasing abundance of data and technological advancements will affect and enhance decision-making. The event tool place in Cork on June 22nd – 24th and attracted an international audience of academics, practitioners and researchers from the emergency management and related sectors.

Martina Madden of FAC gave a presentation on day one of the conference which summarised the research and conclusions of the paper ‘Communicating in a Crisis – The Development of a Crisis Communication Tool within the S-HELP Project’. The paper detailed the importance of fast and credible messaging to the public in the wake of a healthcare crisis such as a pandemic or natural disaster, to mitigate the negative impact that such events can have on public health.

The CCT will be part of the overall S-HELP Decision Support System (DSS), an online platform that will help healthcare emergency responders to make better decisions in a disaster context and will be tested later this year in a simulated catastrophe scenario.

Day two of the event featured presentations by other members of the S-HELP consortium about different facets of the research the project has undertaken. Big data expert Tom Davenport was the keynote speaker for final day of the conference, closing what was an interesting and informative event.
