Client: Housing Agency
Commissioned by the Government’s advisory body on housing, the Housing Agency in 2013, the report assesses the future minimum housing requirements in 272 of Ireland’s urban settlements for the period 2014 to 2018. The report has featured extensively in national media in Ireland and has formed the basis for policy development since its publication. The 272 urban settlements modelled were defined on the basis of having a resident population of 1,000 persons or more, as per the latest census. Collectively these settlements account for approximately two-thirds of the national population.
Based on projected population growth as well as using trends in proportional household composition, the report forecasts a minimum required supply of 80,000 residential units in urban areas nationally between 2014 and 2018, an average equivalent of 16,000 per annum (ranging from 9,500 units in 2014 to 21,000 units in 2018).
